A JOINT RESOLUTION urging congress to propose the keep nine amendment to the united states CONSTITUTION.

Whereas, an independent United States Supreme Court is an essential element of America's system of checks and balances that protects our constitutional rights; and

Whereas, the United States Supreme Court has been composed of nine Justices for more than 150 years; and

Whereas, the President and Congress should be prohibited from undermining the independence of the Supreme Court by changing the number of Justices on the court; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

SECTION 1.  That the North Carolina General Assembly urges Congress to propose the following Keep Nine Amendment to the United States Constitution:

The Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine Justices.

SECTION 2.  The Secretary of State shall transmit a copy of this resolution to each member of North Carolina's Congressional Delegation, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, and each of the presiding officers of the legislative chambers of the other 49 states.

SECTION 3.  This resolution is effective upon ratification.
