S537: The Patrick Mays Hazard Light Safety Act. Latest Version
Session: 2023 - 2024
AN ACT requiring the use of hazard warning signal lamps for vehicles stopped in highway traffic.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 20‑134 reads as rewritten:
§ 20‑134. Lights on parked and stopped vehicles.
…
(a1) Whenever a vehicle is stopped upon a highway with a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour or greater, the vehicle shall be operated with its hazard warning signal lamps illuminated, if so equipped. Violation of this section does not constitute negligence per se in any civil action. Nothing in this subsection shall be interpreted to abrogate the provisions of G.S. 20‑161. For purposes of this subsection, hazard warning signal lamps means special lights on a vehicle that flash on and off and are primarily used to warn other drivers that a vehicle is slowing down, reversing, or stationary.
….
SECTION 2. This act becomes effective October 1, 2023.
