an act TO INCREASE THE COMPENSATION OF THE CHAIR AND THE MEMBERS OF THE halifax county board of education AND TO ALLOW THE halifax county BOARD OF EDUCATION TO INCREASE THE MONTHLY COMPENSATION OF ITS MEMBERS and establish an expense allowance for the chair and members.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Chapter 530 of the 1971 Session Laws is amended by adding a new section to read:

Sec. 5.1.  The compensation of the chair of the Halifax County Board of Education shall be six hundred fifty dollars ($650.00) per month, and the compensation of the members of the Halifax County Board of Education shall be five hundred fifty dollars ($550.00) per month. Beginning July 1, 2025, the amount of monthly compensation for the chair and members of the Halifax County Board of Education may be increased by majority vote of the Halifax County Board of Education in an amount not to exceed four percent (4%) in any four‑year period. Beginning July 1, 2023, an expense allowance for the chair and members of the Halifax County Board of Education may be established by majority vote of the Halifax County Board of Education.

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective July 1, 2023.
