AN ACT to direct the general statutes commission to review the term drug abuse wherever it appears in the general statutes and to recommend a bill to replace it with the term substance use disorder, where appropriate.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  The General Statutes Commission shall review the term drug abuse wherever it appears in the General Statutes and shall recommend a bill to the 2023 General Assembly that would replace it with the term substance use disorder, where appropriate.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated from the General Fund to the Department of Health and Human Services the sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) in nonrecurring funds for the 2022‑2023 fiscal year for the creation and dissemination of educational materials for public health professionals in this State concerning the change in language and the underlying science supporting the change.

SECTION 3.  This act becomes effective July 1, 2022.
