AN ACT to require health benefit plan coverage for medically necessary dental procedures that are a result of cancer treatment.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Article 3 of Chapter 58 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

§ 58‑3‑281.  Coverage for dental procedures resulting from cancer treatment.

(a)        Every health benefit plan offered by an insurer in this State shall provide coverage for medically necessary dental procedures that are the direct result of cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, biotherapy, or radiation therapy.

(b)        The coverage required under this section shall include evaluations and examinations, laboratory assessments, medications, and treatments associated with the medically necessary dental procedures resulting from cancer treatment.

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective October 1, 2021, and applies to insurance contracts issued, renewed, or amended on or after that date.
