AN ACT to prohibit carrying a mattress on the roof of a passenger vehicle.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 20‑116 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:

(q)      Notwithstanding any provision of this section to the contrary, a passenger vehicle may not operate on the highways of this State with a mattress loaded on top of the roof of the passenger vehicle. For purposes of this subsection, the term passenger vehicle means a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 pounds that is designed primarily for the transportation of persons. This subsection does not apply to the transport of a mattress secured in a truck's rear cargo area that is designed primarily for the transportation of property.

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective December 1, 2021, and applies to offenses committed on or after that date.
