A HOUSE RESOLUTION HONORING THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND CELEBRATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary—the Semiquincentennial—of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States of America; and
Whereas, for two and one‑half centuries the people of the United States have built and sustained a nation dedicated to the principles of liberty, equality, and self‑government; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina played a pivotal role in the movement for American independence; and
Whereas, on April 12, 1776, the Fourth Provincial Congress, meeting at Halifax, adopted the Halifax Resolves, the first official action by an entire colony recommending independence from Great Britain, a date memorialized on the North Carolina State flag and seal; and
Whereas, the citizens of Mecklenburg County are remembered for the Mecklenburg Resolves of May 1775, among the earliest American expressions of the desire for independence; and
Whereas, North Carolinians served with distinction throughout the Revolutionary War; and
Whereas, true to its motto of To be rather than to seem, North Carolina has continued to contribute to the strength, prosperity, and character of the nation; and
Whereas, it is fitting to commemorate this milestone anniversary and to honor the enduring legacy of the State of North Carolina; Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
SECTION 1. The 250th anniversary of the United States of America is hereby recognized and celebrated as a landmark occasion in the history of the nation.
SECTION 2. The historic and continuing contributions of the State of North Carolina to the founding and flourishing of the United States are hereby honored and commemorated.
SECTION 3. The people of North Carolina are encouraged to observe this Semiquincentennial and to participate in commemorative events celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary.
SECTION 4. This resolution is effective upon adoption.
